TOS Review ~ See the Light, Volume 1

SeetheLightLogo

The girls were really excited when they found out we were reviewing the See the Light art program.  All of them from Marie to McKenzie love to draw and make special creations so this is right up their alley. Let’s just say they don't get their drawing ability from me.

STL_OSH_Ad_041511Home See the Light Art Class is a video-based DVD program taught by Master Artist Pat Knepley who loves art and has a degree in Art Education.  The art curriculum teaches art techniques along with art history and biblical concepts using fairly inexpensive supplies.  Art Class  includes 36 lessons on 9 DVDs (4 lessons each)with the addition of three bonus lessons in the complete year long course.    Suited best for elementary aged children, art skills are taught from the basics to ending up being able to draw a human figure.  The 9 DVD set covers the following topics:

                                             Volume 1: The Basics

                                             PhotobucketVolume 2: Shape & Space

                 Volume 3: Value & Color

       Volume 4: Color Blending Techniques

         Volume 5: Proportions for Composition

Volume 6: Texture & Form

Volume 7: Perspective for the Landscape

Volume 8: Balance & Foreshadowing

Volume 9: The Portrait

*** detailed descriptions of each lesson can be found HERE***

As a TOS crew member we received Volume 1: The Basics which includes the following lessons:

Lesson 1

Tools of the Trade ~ what you need to have on hand to be ready to draw.

Lesson 2

It All Starts with a Line ~ learn different qualities of a line and about contour drawing.

Lesson 3

Contours & Composition ~ start training your eyes and hands to be synchronized and work on a composition with an apple as the subject.

Lesson 4

Draw What You See ~ complete a contour drawing of a shoe.

Bonus Lesson

Bonus Lesson: Chalk Artist Gloria Kohlmann teaches you how to draw “Cross Hill,” the art shown on The Crossmaker.

I liked the way that the Bible is integrated into the lessons and the way that Pat spoke to the kids and not the camera.  My girls are naturally creative/artsy and the volume 1 disc was something that the older three have already mastered. The only thing I didn’t like is that you have to buy all of the DVD’s at once. I would love to be able to purchase the DVD’s individually starting at Volume 5.  Overall we would recommend this product to anyone looking for an art program.

The entire 9 course set of See the Light curriculum can be purchased for $99.99.  There is also an online option that allows you to do a free trial. Click here to learn how you can request your own free DVD.

See the Light also created Bible Story DVDs, containing a Bible story told through art, and three art lessons ~ a creative lettering lesson, a chalk pastel lesson, and a mixed media lesson.  These include:

  1. An Easter story (The Crossmaker)
  2. The Christmas story (The Gift of Love)
  3. Paul (Shipwrecked — available soon)
  4. Moses (God’s Special Surprise — available soon)
  5. Jonah (God’s Runaway — available soon)
